How Sydney Paychecks Are Taxed

Understanding the tax structure for Sydney workers.

🇦🇺 Australian Income Tax Brackets

Australia uses a federal income tax system with progressive rates: 0% up to A$18,200 (tax-free threshold), 19% to A$45,000, 32.5% to A$120,000, 37% to A$180,000, and 45% above that. There is no state income tax in NSW — unlike the US where state income tax adds another layer.

🏥 Medicare Levy — 2%

The Medicare Levy is a 2% charge on taxable income (above A$26,000) that funds Australia's public healthcare system, Medicare. It is separate from income tax and is mandatory for most residents. For high earners, a Medicare Levy Surcharge may also apply if you don't hold private hospital cover.

🏛️ No State Income Tax in NSW

Unlike the US where states like New York levy their own income taxes, Australian states including New South Wales do not have a separate state income tax. This simplifies Sydney's paycheck calculation considerably compared to NYC.

💼 Superannuation (11% — Not From Your Paycheck)

Your employer contributes 11% of your salary into a superannuation (retirement) fund on top of your salary — it does not come out of your take-home pay. Super is separate from your paycheck deductions. This makes your actual take-home pay higher relative to your gross salary compared to many other countries.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sydney paycheck and tax questions answered.

Sydney has a notably lower effective tax rate than NYC for most income levels. At A$120,000 (~$78k USD), Sydney workers pay roughly 30% effective rate. NYC workers at a comparable USD income pay 34–38%. Key reasons: no state income tax in NSW, no city income tax, and Australia's tax-free threshold of A$18,200.

The Medicare Levy is a 2% charge on taxable income that funds Australia's public healthcare system (Medicare). It kicks in above A$26,000 (single). It's automatically withheld from your paycheck — you do not need to opt into Medicare separately. Equivalent to the Medicare portion of US FICA, but goes to universal healthcare instead.

No. Superannuation (Australia's pension system) is paid by your employer in addition to your salary at 11% of your base salary — it does not reduce your take-home pay. This is fundamentally different from US Social Security (6.2%) which is deducted from your paycheck. Your gross salary is what you receive before income tax and Medicare Levy.

Australia's financial year runs from July 1 to June 30 (not January–December like the US). Tax returns are filed by October 31 each year. The rates in this calculator apply to the 2025–26 financial year. Employers withhold Pay As You Go (PAYG) tax from each paycheck throughout the year.

This calculator uses 2025–26 Australian income tax brackets and Medicare Levy rates. It provides close estimates for salaried (PAYG) employees claiming the tax-free threshold. It does not account for the Low Income Tax Offset (LITO), HECS/HELP student loan repayments, Medicare Levy Surcharge, or salary packaging. Consult the ATO or an Australian accountant for precise figures.
