NYC Minimum Wage in 2026
New York City has one of the highest minimum wages in the United States. As of January 1, 2026, the minimum wage in New York City (and Nassau, Suffolk, and Westchester counties) is $16.50 per hour. This applies to most private-sector employees.
Important: NYC's minimum wage is higher than both the New York State minimum ($15.50/hour for the rest of the state) and the federal minimum ($7.25/hour). NYC employers must pay whichever is highest — which is always the NYC rate for workers in the five boroughs.

NYC Minimum Wage Paycheck Breakdown (2026)
What does $16.50/hour actually translate to in take-home pay? Here are estimates for a full-time NYC minimum wage worker (40 hrs/week, 52 weeks), filing single:
| Pay Period | Gross Pay | Est. Net Pay | Annual Net |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weekly (40 hrs) | $660.00 | ~$540 | ~$28,080 |
| Bi-Weekly (80 hrs) | $1,320.00 | ~$1,080 | ~$28,080 |
| Monthly | $2,860.00 | ~$2,340 | ~$28,080 |
| Annual | $34,320.00 | ~$28,080 | ~$28,080 |
At minimum wage in NYC, a single filer has a relatively low effective tax rate (around 18%), because much of the income falls in lower federal and state brackets. The NYC local tax still applies at ~3.1% on this income level.
Tipped Workers & Minimum Wage
New York State eliminated the separate "tip credit" minimum wage for most workers in 2011. This means all NYC workers — including tipped restaurant and hospitality workers — must receive at least $16.50/hour as their base wage, regardless of tips received. This is unlike most other states where tipped workers can be paid below the standard minimum wage.
Fast Food Workers
NYC fast food workers covered by the Fast Food Minimum Wage law may have a different schedule. As of 2024, many fast food workers were already at $18/hour under the California-influenced statewide law that went into effect in 2024. Check with your employer or the NYC Department of Consumer and Worker Protection for the most current rates for your sector.
Other Minimum Wage Exceptions
- Homeworkers: Workers performing piecework at home have specific rate schedules.
- Minors under 18: May be paid 85% of the minimum wage under certain conditions.
- Apprentices: Formal registered apprentices may have separate rates during their program.
- Farm workers: Different rules apply under the Farm Laborers Fair Labor Practices Act.
Reporting Minimum Wage Violations
